Since we arrive at Nigayala, we have dedicated to plant trees in some areas of the land. We have planted over 3000 native trees like arboloco (Smallanthus piramidalis), alisos (Alnus acuminata), cedros (Juglans neotropica), saucos (Sambucus peruviana), and some other ornamental, frutal and for wood.
Trees are the principal engine of Nigayala, with them we have not only improve quality of the soils and protect the water sources; they transform the landscape and with their growth they make biological corridors between forest patches in the area, and provide refuge and food to birds, insects and other animal and vegetal species.

By planting trees in pasture areas of the farm, we have created a silvopastoril system, which provides shadow to the animals in sunny days, protect them from the wind, and help the grass to grow fast due to the nutrients and soil organisms that trees provide. Trees reduce the risk of floods in the rainny season or avoid erosion when there is no water; also species like arboloco or sauco are good source of protein for cows and horses.
When our neighbors and campesinos see the process and the results we have accomplished planting trees, protecting the water sources, caring and loving our animals, and the clean and organic production, we incentivate them to change and improve the way the land is managed. With these little actions we look foward to find the economical and environmental balance this planet needs.
